Tangled - Botticelli's Venus by DiegoBernardo Tangled - Botticelli's Venus by DiegoBernardo
I wanted to do a drawing mixing a Disney movie and a famous artwork. I realised that Rapunzel and Botticelli's Venus have the same long, golden hair, so I thought it could be funny, including the rest of the movie's characters replacing the ones of the painting.
This time I worked harder with the light, adding highlights and shadows.
"Tangled" is property of Disney.

I must say that it didn't take me long to see how creative and enticing this piece was. You have great perspective and I could see this scene in the movie. It is also a great tribute to Botticelli's work, you don't have to look at the title to know that this was based off of his work.

The color is vibrant and the anatomy is well proportioned in each character, and to offer some constructive criticism here's what I feel that can improve this picture and future submissions if possible.

I can see how challenging it was to make the shading around the center of Rapunzel's hair that she is seemingly standing on have depth and shape like a bowl. Some of the line-shading you inputted to spread the look of hair follicles in the center of the bowl-base that Rapunzel is standing on seems a little rough-edged; the lines could have been smoothed out a bit to give it that "lush" look her hair has in the movie.

I also can see around the rim of the bowl that the shading for "depth" is a bit ragged, instead of a smooth transition of shading color, you have it layering from super dark to a light color and a lighter color; the right hand corner of the base of hair is a good example of the transitioning used. It doesn't look "blended" rather it looks like dark colors in a pileup. I would recommend that you try and make the shading like a gradient, smooth and perfect transition from dark to light shading, where there are no brush marks visible and improves hair realism by 60%.

I can also see the same shading problem when I look at the horse. White is a hard color to work with and sometimes depending on how dark or light the picture is shading can be extremely taxing. I can see for this picture and the color tone that exists, the shading was exaggerated a bit. It's unfortunate that white of all colors has to blow shading out of proportion, but as this a fine example of that process some of the shading on the horse is "ridgy". The neck, and right upper chest are the most uneven of the shading, it's a bit "too deep" and "smudgy" at this point. I would try to lighten the darkest part of the shading a bit and then spread it out to complement the lighting that you had so brilliantly inputted.

The only lighting issue I see is Rapunzal, the light coming her direction is not as strong or face-forward as the background presents. If the lighting were toned down a bit and more shading had been used on the face, neck, and dress-it would have been more believable.

When I look at the faces, I love their expressions and tone; emotion is obvious and brilliant. But I can tell that the mouths of each character seem a little "off". When I see their mouths, I think them more goofy and loose. Take Flinn for example, his mouth seems a little too long width-wise for his face. The line art seems uneven and stretched, if you had shrunk the length of the smile for his face I think it would have made his expression more believable and grasping; the lower lip is also a bit too "bulgy" in comparison to the size of his upper lip. While bulgy is of course the big part of the difference of appearance from upper to lower lip, I find that it's not as extreme as the lower lip is on his face.

Rapunzel's mouth is also a bit over-exaggerated, it is slightly too big for her face in respect to her nose and eyes. If it had been shrunk in width and in length, the presentation would give her jaw and cheeks more realism and believable construct as she is a more petite body.

I really love this picture and hope that this isn't the last we'll see of your work :)

PS: No matter how perfect a picture is, there is always SOMETHING you can improve. But there is no shame in that since none of us are perfect, that's what makes each piece unique and original-imperfections big, or small. :)

To say that this art piece is spot on isn't enough. I find the parody to be quite entertaining as well. Merging ideas into one is actually one of the excellent ways of displaying creativity, even if the ideas had already been cemented some time ago.

In terms of Vision and Originality, this would score high, since I have yet to see a Disney related character become parodied in an old Renaissance artwork.

However, Rapunzel's legs appear to be smaller in comparison to her head, and Mother Gothel's feet looks too big (if only they could be mashed together and then spread out evenly  ) And there are lighting issues here - the light source should be from the back, but it seems that light is reflecting off Rapunzel's face from a second light source. Pascal's lighting seems the least realistic. But I did really like the lighting on Flynn, Maximus, and Gothel :D

If I had to be picky about Tangled's canon, I would also add to the fact that Rapunzel's hair is not layered, because if it was, half of her head would've been brunette! But I understand that you are actually copying Venus's hairstyle.

Thank you for painting such a wonderful picture. It has still made my day :)
